当今世界著名的高档豪华轿车品牌,奥迪(Audi)的一切可溯源至一个多世纪前的1899年11月14日,卡尔·奔驰位于曼海姆的车厂一名叫奥古斯特·霍希(August Horch)的汽车工程师,在科隆组建了属于自己的公司--August Horch&Cie(霍希公司)。从1901年起,霍希开始生产自己的汽车。很快霍希就用产品和发明展现出他的天才,树立了霍希作为汽车品牌的知名度。霍希公司相继推出了装备2缸和4缸发动机的新车,霍希本人发明了整铸缸体,并在若干汽车比赛车中新自上阵夺得锦标。
